Before the greeting comes the problem of meaning.

Abstract signal shapes passing between two distant geometric forms

First contact stories are often communication stories in disguise. The alien is not interesting only because it looks different. It is interesting because humans must decide what counts as evidence, intention and a shared reference.

What does Contact make measurable?

Carl Sagan’s Contact begins with detection and interpretation. A signal is not automatically a message, and a message is not automatically an invitation. The work pays attention to institutions, scientific argument and the political consequences of a discovery that cannot be privately controlled.

Its science-fictional premise becomes stronger because the social response is not smooth. Different groups assign different meanings to the same evidence. Communication creates a problem of authority as well as a problem of decoding.

Why is Arrival about language?

Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival, adapted from Ted Chiang’s “Story of Your Life”, treats language as a system that shapes attention and prediction. The film’s aliens are not simply speaking an encrypted human language. Their written form, grammar and perception challenge the assumption that translation means replacing one word with another.

The contact process therefore needs patience. A symbol may refer to an object, an action, a relation or an entire situation. Misreading a phrase can alter military decisions when the participants already expect danger.

What makes Solaris different?

Stanislaw Lem’s Solaris is less interested in a successful exchange. The planet’s ocean may produce forms that resemble communication, but the humans cannot establish that their categories apply. The encounter exposes the limits of human-centred interpretation.

Compare the three works by asking what each treats as the main unknown. Contact focuses on evidence and institutions. Arrival focuses on shared language and altered perception. Solaris questions whether an alien intelligence must be recognisable as a person or speaker at all. A rigorous first-contact story does not make the unknown smaller than it is merely to provide a tidy speech.
